The statement of purpose
must cover in 500 words or less the following topics:
• Why do I want to participate in this REU in Puerto Rico
• What do I think about the challenges of working as an engineer in a
global economy
• What is my area of research interest and how it relates to my future
plans after graduation
• What if any is my experience with cultures other than mine or why am I
interested in experiencing this.
At least two (2) recommendation letters from faculty members who have
worked advised or taught to the applicant. Two letters are required,
with up to three accepted. The letter must address the applicant’s
ability to perform research, and work in multi-disciplinary
multi-cultural teams.
An official academic transcript. A GPA of 3.00 or above is highly
preferred.

To apply for research, students should select and rank up to 3 projects
from a list provided here and program coordinators will use those
preferences to make the official assignments. The student will know the
nature of his/her assignment before travel arrangements are made, so
that he/she is fully aware of the nature of work expected at their
arrival to Puerto Rico. UPRM students will be interviewed by the faculty
advisor prior to make the final assignments. The list of projects
covering traditional and not traditional fields of industrial
engineering including Reliability Engineering, Manufacturing
Engineering, Service Engineering, Automation, Biostatistics, Logistics,
Data Analysis, Interdisciplinary Community Development or , will be
listed in the following link:
