Introduction
The Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus was founded in July 1954. Since its inception, it offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. Three graduate programs are currently offered leading to the degree of Master in the areas of Industrial Engineering.
The Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico has a tradition of close collaboration with the industry. The Department has been very successful in taking advantage of the unique concentration of industrial activity on the island. In other engineering disciplines, it might be appropriate to reproduce professional practice situations in a laboratory. However, in the Industrial Engineering field, where integrated systems are composed of people, equipment, materials, and information, the industry is the ideal laboratory. The industry is the only place where the interaction of all elements of this integrated system can be observed legitimately.
The Department has very good interaction with organizations and institutions in the manufacturing, service and government sectors. Typical collaboration occurs during class projects, research projects by graduate students, as well as basic and applied research by the faculty. In addition, the faculty offers consulting services and technical seminars. The Department also provides specialized services using our resources and laboratories.
Undergraduate students accepted to our program are chosen from the best students from schools in Puerto Rico. Accepted graduate students come from the best students in our undergraduate program, in addition to other engineering programs in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, Central and South America. Our faculty is composed of 15 professors. The majority hold PhD degrees from prestigious universities in the United States and Europe.
Since 1982, it offers a Masters degree in Managerial Systems Engineering and since August 2000, two Masters of Science in Industral Engineering programs are offered, (with or without thesis)
Our graduate programs are designed for engineers that are seeking to deepen in operations research, applied statistics, ergonomy, and production systems among other things.
The Masters of Engineering program requires a total of 30 credits including a three credit engineering project. The Masters of Science with thesis requires a total of 30 course credits plus six credits of thesis research. Students in the Masters of Science without thesis program are requiered to take 36 credit hours in courses and pass a comprehensive written examination.
