UPRM :: INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING :: about

The Department

The Department of Industrial Engineering is part of the Engineering Faculty of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. It was established in 1954, that was the beginning of the five-years program toward a BSIE offered by the department. In 1982-83 the graduate program was established with a Master in Engineering (ME). Currently, the program offers three options: Management Systems, Quality Control, and Manufacturing Systems. During the academic year 1996-1997 the University approved the graduate program of Master of Science in Industrial Engineering with options of thesis and no thesis. The new Masters options are available since the Fall of 1998.

The Department's faculty is very active and gets involved internationally. Efforts for collaboration with Universities in South and Central America have been successful. These include the University of Lima in Perú and ITESM in Mexico. The "21st International Conference on Computers and Industrial Engineering" (1997) and the "Group Technology/Cellular Manufacturing Symposium" (2000) were both international conferences hosted by the Department.

The main purpose of the Industrial Engineering program at UPRM is to prepare professionals for the practice of Industrial Engineering in Puerto Rico and elsewhere. Graduates from the Industrial Engineering program at the Mayagüez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico are instrumental in the planning, designing, implementing and evaluating products, services, on systems that integrate people, materials, equipment, and information for the progress and improvement of the quality of life of humankind. They insure that these products, services, or systems can be provided economically with the required level of quality necessary for satisfying society’s needs. The Industrial Engineer draws upon knowledge and skills in mathematics and the physical, social, physiological and computer sciences together with principles and methods of engineering analysis and design.

  • To accomplish our goal and enable our graduates to perform as Industrial Engineers they will be able to: apply the concepts and techniques relevant to the analysis and solution of challenges in the field of Industrial Engineering.
